Biden at 80: His impact on the nation and the world

As President Biden nears a milestone birthday, a look back at his career in public service.

Eighty years. It’s a milestone that most of us will reach, if we’re lucky. But for someone who has spent his entire adult life in public service, it’s a moment to reflect on a career that has had a profound impact on the nation and the world.

Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942. He was the eldest of four children, and his father was a car salesman. Biden's family struggled financially, and they moved several times during his childhood. Despite the challenges, Biden excelled in school and went on to attend the University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School.

Biden's political career began in 1970, when he was elected to the New Castle County Council. He served on the council for seven years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972. Biden quickly became a rising star in the Democratic Party, and he was soon appointed to the Senate Judiciary Committee. In 1988, Biden ran for president, but he dropped out of the race after being accused of plagiarizing a speech by British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock.

Biden returned to the Senate and continued to serve on the Judiciary Committee. He played a key role in the passage of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which was designed to reduce crime and violence in the United States. Biden also helped to lead the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton in 1998.

In 2008, Biden was elected vice president of the United States. He served under President Barack Obama for eight years, and he played a key role in the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Biden also represented the United States at numerous international summits and meetings.

In 2020, Biden ran for president again, and he defeated incumbent President Donald Trump. Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021.

As president, Biden has faced a number of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the rising cost of living. Despite these challenges, Biden has also made progress on a number of important issues, including climate change, gun control, and healthcare.

As Biden nears his 80th birthday, it is clear that he has had a long and distinguished career in public service. He has served the people of the United States with honor and distinction, and he has made a real difference in the world.
